The "Apotheosis" Tablet
Temple 14 Palenque

This relief depicts King Chan Balum and his mother in the Otherworld. Chan Balum's mother died 260 days before his own death and here they are shown reenacting an event that dates back 1,000,000 years in Maya history. It is said that at this time the First Mother of the Maya, "Lady Beastie" first offered God "K" (the small figure held by the mother) to God "G" (playing his role is Chan Balum).
